When should my child have their first orthodontic exam?
We recommend bringing your son or daughter in for their first orthodontic consultation around their seventh birthday, before they’ve finished losing all of their baby teeth. At this time, we can spot early warning signs of potential orthodontic issues, and it will be easier for us to guide the jaw and underlying bone into the correct positions.
Will I have to wear a retainer after I’m done with braces?
Yes. You’ll need to wear a retainer after orthodontic treatment. Otherwise, your teeth may relapse and shift back into their original positions, meaning your whole treatment was all for naught. Luckily, a retainer will prevent this from occurring. Depending on the details of your case, you should wear a retainer almost 24/7 for several weeks or months once your treatment is finished; after that, you might be able to switch to only wearing it at night.
Can I straighten my teeth without wearing metal braces?
Teenagers and adults who don’t wish to compromise their appearances may be eligible for clear/ceramic braces, Invisalign clear aligners, or self-ligating braces rather than noticeable metal brackets and wires. During your initial consultation, we can discuss the benefits of each of these types of orthodontic treatment and determine which one is best suited for your unique needs.
What’s the best way to pay for my orthodontic treatment?
We accept most dental insurance plans, including MassHealth. We will even file your claims on your behalf to make sure you receive all of the coverage you’re entitled to. However, if you don’t have kind of coverage, we can still assist you in applying for third-party financing with LendingPoint. We are also partnered with Chewsi, a convenient app that helps you save on dental care.
Does it hurt to get braces?
The process of actually placing your braces should result in little or no discomfort. Braces work by exerting a slight pressure on the teeth, so it’s perfectly normal to feel a bit achy or sore for a few days after you get them placed or adjusted. Taking an over-the-counter pain reliever like ibuprofen as needed can alleviate discomfort in the meantime. If the pain becomes severe or doesn’t fade away after a few days, call us right away.
How long will it take to straighten my teeth?
The answer to this question varies from patient to patient. Some treatments can be completed in as little as six months, while others may take up to three years. The length of your treatment will depend on the specific nature of your treatment and the orthodontic issues we must correct.
Should I still see my general dentist when I’m going through orthodontic treatment?
Just because your teeth are covered by braces doesn’t mean you can slack on your oral hygiene. It’s still massively important that you continue visiting your general dentist at least once every six months for regular checkups and cleanings. We can work together with your dentist to ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy and that your treatment isn’t impaired by cavities or other dental health issues.
